Why is a Data Backup Important?

Both software errors and hardware defects can cause files you've saved to be lost and become unusable. The resulting damage can be enormous, especially if the files are documents and content relevant to businesses. To protect yourself from data loss, you should perform regular backups. A backup refers to data protection. The backup copies of the files can be stored on external storage media or in the cloud, making them independent of the general hardware and software of the devices. This ensures that you can restore files that were thought to be lost with just a few clicks.

How Can a Data Backup Be Created?

Regardless of whether data protection is relevant to you for Windows or another operating system, various approaches are available. The most convenient way is to choose modern backup software. It ensures that data protection is carried out automatically within a specified time frame. However, you can also opt for a manual backup. Here, you can specifically select the files relevant for data protection.

Automatic Data Backup Offers Great Convenience

By choosing automatic data protection for Windows, you relieve yourself or your employees and save time. Additionally, you minimize the risk of important files being lost because you forgot to perform the backup. If you are looking for software to assist you in creating backups, you are in the right place. Discover the advantages of our BackUp Maker now and entrust your data protection to reliable software.

Run BackUp Maker as a Service +

Question: How to run BackUp Maker as a Service?
Answer: On all Windows systems since Windows Vista (or on server versions since Windows Server 2008), BackUp Maker can be started as a service via Windows Task Scheduler without requiring a user to be logged on to the system. The program therefore operates as a Windows-controlled service that can perform backups independently of a user login.

All that is needed to do this is to change the post-installation task "BackUp_Maker-USERNAME" in Windows Task Scheduler (which can be found via Windows Search for the keyword "Task Scheduler") as follows:

Instead of "Run only when user is logged on" you must enable the "Run whether user is logged on or not" option.

In addition, the trigger "At startup" must be selected under "Trigger" instead of "At log on".

After these changes, the system should be restarted, alternatively, BackUp Maker can be stopped and the task that has just been changed can be started.

Note that the BackUp Maker tray icon is not displayed in this type of execution; the program runs virtually as a service invisible in the background. It is therefore important to use the option of sending reports by e-mail to inform you whether the backup jobs created have been performed correctly.

Important: To process jobs, you must finish the ongoing task through task scheduling and restart BackUp Maker from the desktop of the user under which the software was set up. After all the changes have been made, BackUp Maker should be completely terminated and the task should be restarted via task scheduling.

Write to CD/DVD +

Question: What should I do if I have problems writing to CD/DVD?
Answer: BackUp Maker writes on CD/DVD media according to the ASPI guidelines using the SPTI standard (SCSI PASS-THROUGH INTERFACE). If you use older burner hardware that does not work according to the ASPI guidelines, error-free writing on CD/DVD media cannot be guaranteed.

Problems with newer/current burner hardware can usually be solved with the following settings:

  • The current user needs administrator rights.
  • Deactivate Autorun by entering the following value in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Cdrom/ Autorun = 0
  • Restarting the system is recommended.
  • Update the drivers: Device Manager - IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller.
  • Question: After writing the CD/DVD is blank, why?
Answer: It is recommended to eject the CD/DVD medium after the writing process - Windows often only recognizes changes and contents of CD/DVD media after the CD/DVD writer has been reinserted.

Question: Some sessions are missing from multisession CDs/DVDs - what to do now?
Answer: Various operating systems cannot display multisessions on CD/DVD, while Nero, WinOnCD and other burning programs easily recognize all sessions (but due to a different standard, the files contained in the sessions cannot be opened).

IsoBuster (freeware) can normally read in and open these sessions and the files they contain - download at http://www.smart-projects .net/isobuster/.

    Back-up to Cloud Storage +

Question: Can BackUp Maker back-up to Cloud Storage such as Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive or Dropbox?
Answer: Yes, BackUp Maker can be used to back up data to all common cloud storage. Depending on the cloud service, programs are available directly from the provider that integrate cloud storage as a virtual folder into Windows Explorer (e.g. Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive or Dropbox).

If the cloud service you use does not offer such integration for Windows, the data transfer can also be carried out via WebDAV, SMB or SFTP, provided that supported by the operator (e.g. MagentaCloud, Strato HiDrive). BackUp Maker allows you to select WebDAV/SMB drives from the "Local & LAN" tab on step "Target directory".

If you have any questions about data backup to the cloud, our technical customer service is at your disposal!

    Backing up smartphone data +

Question: Can I back-up my smartphone with BackUp Maker?
Answer: With the combination of Windows 11's Smartphone Link app and BackUp Maker, you can easily back up your pictures, videos, and documents from your smartphone. To do this, set up the pre-installed Smartphone Link app on your Windows 11 device and connect your smartphone. Your smartphone will now be displayed in Windows Explorer and can be selected in BackUp Maker for data backup.

For information on how to set up the Smartphone Link app, see https://www.microsoft.com/windows/sync-across-your-devices.

    Network drive not visible +

Question: Mapped network drive not visible in BackUp Maker, why?
Answer: BackUp Maker runs with administrator privileges by default, while network drives are usually mapped as standard users and are therefore not visible to administrators.

Solution 1: Run BackUp Maker without administrator privileges

Exit BackUp Maker from the main menu "Program", "Close" and restart BackUp Maker via the desktop shortcut (without administrator rights).

In case that you always want to start BackUp Maker without administrator rights, also change the "BackUp_Maker-USERNAME" task in the Windows Task Scheduler:

    1. Type "Task Scheduler" in the search box of the Windows taskbar and start Task Scheduler.

    2. Click "Task Scheduler Library" and double-click the "BackUp Maker-USERNAME" task.

    3. Uncheck the "Run with highest privileges" option and click "OK".

Solution 2: Enable SMB features and LinkedConnections

    1. Type "Windows Features" in the search box of the Windows taskbar and click "Turn Windows features on or off".

    2. Enable the "SMB Direct" and "SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support" options (any) and click OK.

    3. Type "regedit" in the search box of the Windows taskbar and open the "Registry Editor".

    4. Locate the registry subkey "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" and verify that an "EnableLinkedConnections" entry of type REG_DWORD exists. If not, right-click in the right pane and create a new "DWORD Value (32-bit)" named "EnableLinkedConnections".

    5. Double-click the "EnableLinkedConnections" value and enter "1" as a value. Confirm with "OK".

    6. Restart your system afterwards.
