Why is a Data Backup Important?

Regular backups are essential to protect against data loss due to hardware defects, software errors, ransomware attacks, or accidental deletion. Without reliable data backup, important documents, company data and personal files can be irretrievably lost. Powerful backup software ensures that all data is automatically and securely stored on external hard drives, NAS systems, or cloud backup. In the event of an emergency, fast data recovery allows lost files to be available again with just a few clicks. Consumers and businesses alike benefit from automated backups and encrypted backup solutions to protect sensitive information from cyberattacks and system failures. How Can a Data Backup Be Created?

Whether you need a backup for Windows or another operating system, there are several ways to effectively protect your data. The simplest and safest solution is a powerful backup software that automatically creates a backup at set time intervals. This way, important files are backed up regularly without manual effort. Alternatively, you can perform a manual backup, in which you specifically select which files and folders should be backed up. In particular, automated data backup on external hard drives, NAS systems or in cloud backup ensures the highest level of protection against data loss. A reliable backup software ensures that you can access your backed up data at any time.

Automatic Data Backup Offers Great Convenience

At the same time, you reduce the risk of data loss due to system errors, cyberattacks, or accidental deletion. Intelligent backup software ensures that your files can be backed up continuously and quickly restored when needed. If you're looking for a powerful backup creation solution, you've come to the right place. Our BackUp Maker enables simple, secure and efficient data backup, whether on an external hard drive, network storage or in the cloud. Run BackUp Maker as a Service +

Question: How to run BackUp Maker as a Service?
Answer: On all Windows systems since Windows Vista (or on server versions since Windows Server 2008), BackUp Maker can be started as a service via Windows Task Scheduler without requiring a user to be logged on to the system. The program therefore operates as a Windows-controlled service that can perform backups independently of a user login.

All that is needed to do this is to change the post-installation task "BackUp_Maker-USERNAME" in Windows Task Scheduler (which can be found via Windows Search for the keyword "Task Scheduler") as follows:

Instead of "Run only when user is logged on" you must enable the "Run whether user is logged on or not" option.

In addition, the trigger "At startup" must be selected under "Trigger" instead of "At log on".

After these changes, the system should be restarted, alternatively, BackUp Maker can be stopped and the task that has just been changed can be started.

Note that the BackUp Maker tray icon is not displayed in this type of execution; the program runs virtually as a service invisible in the background. It is therefore important to use the option of sending reports by e-mail to inform you whether the backup jobs created have been performed correctly.

Important: To process jobs, you must finish the ongoing task through task scheduling and restart BackUp Maker from the desktop of the user under which the software was set up. After all the changes have been made, BackUp Maker should be completely terminated and the task should be restarted via task scheduling.

Write to CD/DVD +

Question: What should I do if I have problems writing to CD/DVD?
Answer: BackUp Maker writes on CD/DVD media according to the ASPI guidelines using the SPTI standard (SCSI PASS-THROUGH INTERFACE). If you use older burner hardware that does not work according to the ASPI guidelines, error-free writing on CD/DVD media cannot be guaranteed.

Problems with newer/current burner hardware can usually be solved with the following settings:

  • The current user needs administrator rights.
  • Deactivate Autorun by entering the following value in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Cdrom/ Autorun = 0
  • Restarting the system is recommended.
  • Update the drivers: Device Manager - IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller.
  • Question: After writing the CD/DVD is blank, why?
Answer: It is recommended to eject the CD/DVD medium after the writing process - Windows often only recognizes changes and contents of CD/DVD media after the CD/DVD writer has been reinserted.

Question: Some sessions are missing from multisession CDs/DVDs - what to do now?
Answer: Various operating systems cannot display multisessions on CD/DVD, while Nero, WinOnCD and other burning programs easily recognize all sessions (but due to a different standard, the files contained in the sessions cannot be opened).

IsoBuster (freeware) can normally read in and open these sessions and the files they contain - download IsoBuster.

    Back-up to Cloud Storage +

Question: Can BackUp Maker back-up to Cloud Storage such as Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive or Dropbox?
Answer: Yes, BackUp Maker can be used to back up data to all common cloud storage. Depending on the cloud service, programs are available directly from the provider that integrate cloud storage as a virtual folder into Windows Explorer (e.g. Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive or Dropbox).

If the cloud service you use does not offer such integration for Windows, the data transfer can also be carried out via WebDAV, SMB or SFTP, provided that supported by the operator (e.g. MagentaCloud, Strato HiDrive). BackUp Maker allows you to select WebDAV/SMB drives from the "Local & LAN" tab on step "Target directory".

If you have any questions about data backup to the cloud, our technical customer service is at your disposal!

    Backing up smartphone data +

Question: Can I back-up my smartphone with BackUp Maker?
Answer: With the combination of Windows 11's Smartphone Link app and BackUp Maker, you can easily back up your pictures, videos, and documents from your smartphone. To do this, set up the pre-installed Smartphone Link app on your Windows 11 device and connect your smartphone. Your smartphone will now be displayed in Windows Explorer and can be selected in BackUp Maker for data backup.

For information on how to set up the Smartphone Link app, see Microsoft website.

    Network drive not visible +

Question: Mapped network drive not visible in BackUp Maker, why?
Answer: BackUp Maker runs with administrator privileges by default, while network drives are usually mapped as standard users and are therefore not visible to administrators.

Solution 1: Run BackUp Maker without administrator privileges

Exit BackUp Maker from the main menu "Program", "Close" and restart BackUp Maker via the desktop shortcut (without administrator rights).

In case that you always want to start BackUp Maker without administrator rights, also change the "BackUp_Maker-USERNAME" task in the Windows Task Scheduler:

    1. Type "Task Scheduler" in the search box of the Windows taskbar and start Task Scheduler.

    2. Click "Task Scheduler Library" and double-click the "BackUp Maker-USERNAME" task.

    3. Uncheck the "Run with highest privileges" option and click "OK".

Solution 2: Enable SMB features and LinkedConnections

    1. Type "Windows Features" in the search box of the Windows taskbar and click "Turn Windows features on or off".

    2. Enable the "SMB Direct" and "SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support" options (any) and click OK.

    3. Type "regedit" in the search box of the Windows taskbar and open the "Registry Editor".

    4. Locate the registry subkey "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" and verify that an "EnableLinkedConnections" entry of type REG_DWORD exists. If not, right-click in the right pane and create a new "DWORD Value (32-bit)" named "EnableLinkedConnections".

    5. Double-click the "EnableLinkedConnections" value and enter "1" as a value. Confirm with "OK".

    6. Restart your system afterwards.

BackUp Maker for Your Use Case

Backup Files to External Hard Drive – Automatic Backups for Windows +

Backing up your files to an external hard drive is the easiest and most reliable way to protect against data loss. With BackUp Maker, you can automatically backup files to USB hard drives or USB sticks – without manual effort, encrypted and compressed in space-saving ZIP format.

How to Automatically Backup Files When Connecting Your Drive

BackUp Maker automatically detects when you connect your external USB hard drive and starts the backup immediately if desired. Once configured, your documents, photos, and videos are backed up automatically – simply plug in your hard drive and you're done. No manual operation required anymore.

Scheduled Automatic Backups: Alternatively, you can set up BackUp Maker to automatically backup your files at scheduled times – daily, weekly, or monthly. The backup software runs quietly in the background and creates your backups reliably, even when you're not at your computer.

    Space-Saving and Secure File Backup

BackUp Maker automatically compresses your files in ZIP format, saving up to 50% storage space on your external hard drive. Protect sensitive files with AES encryption up to 256 bit – even if your hard drive is lost or stolen, your data remains secure.

Incremental Backups: Backup only new and changed files instead of copying all your data completely each time. This saves time and storage space, enabling more frequent backups without long waiting times.

Multiple Backup Versions for Maximum Data Protection

With BackUp Maker, you can create multiple backup versions and keep older file versions. If you accidentally delete or overwrite a file, simply restore it from a previous backup version – your files are protected multiple times.

Best Backup Software for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7

BackUp Maker was specifically developed for Windows and supports all versions including Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7. The intuitive interface guides you step by step: Select which files and folders to backup, choose your external hard drive as the backup destination, enable automation – done. Your files will be backed up reliably from now on.

The free Standard Edition is available to home users without restrictions and offers professional file backup to external hard drives, USB sticks, or other removable media.

Create NAS Backup – Automatically Backup Files to Network Storage +

Creating a NAS backup is a professional solution for home users and small businesses who want to store their data centrally and securely on the network. With BackUp Maker, backing up to NAS systems like Synology, QNAP, or Western Digital becomes effortless – without complicated network configuration and with fully automatic backup. This guide shows you step by step how to create an automatic backup to NAS and reliably secure your important files on your home network or office.

Advantages of NAS Backup Over External Hard Drives

A backup to NAS offers decisive advantages over USB hard drives, which are especially important for regular data backups:

    1. No USB cable needed: Your data is backed up over the network – the NAS doesn't need to be physically connected to your PC.
    2. Backup multiple computers: All PCs on the network can create their backups to the same NAS system, each in their own folder.
    3. Automatic backups around the clock: The NAS is always accessible, backups can be performed automatically at any time – even at night or on weekends.
    4. Central data backup: All important data in one place, redundantly stored through RAID systems in the NAS.
    5. Access from anywhere: With proper configuration, you can access your NAS backups remotely.

Step-by-Step Guide: Create NAS Backup with BackUp Maker

With BackUp Maker, you can set up an automatic backup to your NAS in just a few minutes. Follow this detailed guide:

    1. Connect NAS Network Drive in Windows

Result: Professional NAS Data Backup Without Effort

After setup, BackUp Maker automatically backs up your data to your NAS system. The compressed and encrypted backups are reliably stored on the network without you lifting a finger. Even if your PC fails or ransomware strikes – your data is safe on the NAS and can be restored at any time.

Additional Benefits of BackUp Maker for NAS Backups

BackUp Maker offers additional features specifically for network backups:

    • Multi-generation backups: Automatically keep multiple versions of your files – access files from yesterday, last week, or last month.
    • Incremental and differential backup: Only changed files are transferred, saving network bandwidth and significantly speeding up the backup process.

With BackUp Maker, you create professional NAS backups in just minutes – reliable, secure, and fully automatic!

Encrypted Cloud Backup – Securely Backup to Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox +

Backing up your files to cloud storage is a secure method to protect important data from hardware failures or ransomware attacks. With BackUp Maker, you can automatically backup files to cloud services – encrypted, compressed, and reliably stored in Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, or other cloud storage providers. Unlike simple cloud sync, BackUp Maker creates real, encrypted backup archives for maximum cloud security.

Advantages of Encrypted Cloud Backup with BackUp Maker

An encrypted cloud storage backup offers decisive advantages over standard cloud synchronization:

    1. Maximum security through encryption: Your cloud backups are stored with AES 256-bit encryption – even the cloud provider cannot access your data.
    2. Space-saving ZIP compression: BackUp Maker automatically compresses your files, saving up to 50% cloud storage space.
    3. Multi-generation backups: Keep multiple backup versions in the cloud – access older file versions when needed.
    4. Ransomware protection: Encrypted ZIP archives protect against subsequent manipulation by malware.
    5. Automatic cloud backup software: Scheduled backups without manual effort – daily, weekly, or monthly.

Three Ways to Backup Files to Cloud Storage with BackUp Maker

BackUp Maker offers flexible options for creating secure cloud backups:

    • Windows Explorer Integration (recommended): Cloud services like Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox integrate directly into Windows Explorer after installing their desktop apps. Your cloud storage appears as a folder under "This PC". Select this folder in BackUp Maker as your backup destination – the cloud app automatically uploads your encrypted backup files.
    • Cloud Desktop Apps: Use the official desktop applications from Google Drive for Desktop, OneDrive, or Dropbox. BackUp Maker saves your data to the local sync folder of the cloud app, which automatically uploads the encrypted ZIP archives to cloud storage.
    • WebDAV/FTP Upload: Some cloud storage providers like Strato HiDrive, MagentaCloud, or IONOS offer WebDAV access. BackUp Maker can access cloud storage directly via WebDAV or upload encrypted backups via SFTP/FTP to web servers – without additional desktop apps.

    9. Save Cloud Backup Job and Test
    • Click "Finish" to create the cloud backup job.
    • Select the new job and click the green Start button.
    • BackUp Maker now creates your first encrypted ZIP backup and uploads it to cloud storage.
    • Depending on data volume and internet speed, the upload may take several minutes to hours.

Result: Secure Cloud Storage Backup with Maximum Control

After setup, BackUp Maker automatically backs up your files encrypted to the cloud. The compressed ZIP archives are reliably uploaded to Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox – without you having to think about it. Even in case of hard drive failure, ransomware attack, or PC theft, your data remains safely stored in cloud storage and can be restored at any time.

Special Advantages of BackUp Maker for Cloud Storage Backups

Unlike standard cloud synchronization, BackUp Maker backup software offers advanced features:

    • Real backup archives instead of sync: BackUp Maker creates ZIP archives of your data – ransomware cannot subsequently encrypt backed-up files in cloud storage.
    • AES-256 encrypted cloud backup: Your cloud backups are password-protected – even Google, Microsoft, or Dropbox cannot access your data (zero-knowledge principle).
    • Incremental cloud backups: Only new and changed files are uploaded to cloud storage – significantly saves upload time and internet bandwidth.
    • Multiple cloud services in parallel: Create the same backup simultaneously to Google Drive AND Dropbox for double security.
    • Automatic backup rotation: Old backup versions are automatically deleted to free up cloud storage space.
    • Offline-capable ZIP archives: Your cloud backups can be opened with any ZIP program – independent of BackUp Maker.

Compatible with All Major Cloud Storage Services

BackUp Maker creates encrypted backups for virtually all cloud storage providers:

    • Microsoft OneDrive – preinstalled in Windows 10/11, 5 GB free cloud storage
    • Google Drive – via Google Drive for Desktop, 15 GB free cloud storage
    • Dropbox – via Dropbox Desktop App, 2 GB free cloud storage
    • iCloud Drive – for Apple users with Windows integration
    • pCloud, MEGA, Box – via desktop app or WebDAV
    • Nextcloud, ownCloud – via WebDAV or desktop client
    • Strato HiDrive, MagentaCloud, IONOS – via WebDAV network address
    Tip for Maximum Cloud Security

Combine cloud backup with local backup: Create two backup jobs with BackUp Maker – one to your NAS or external hard drive (fast recovery) and one to cloud storage (protection against local data loss). This follows the 3-2-1 backup rule: 3 copies of your data, on 2 different media types, 1 copy stored offsite in the cloud.

With BackUp Maker, you create professional encrypted cloud storage backups – reliable, secure, and fully automatic!
